MGA STATEMENT OF STANDARDS

2024 Eagle Watch Men’s Golf Association

Thank you for your interest in joining the Eagle Watch MGA! This Association was formed decades ago for the sole purpose of promoting the game of golf amongst our membership and making it fun. We sponsor several tournaments yearly along with our popular Thursday Men’s League- all of which are a blast and allow for camaraderie amongst our members, memories to be made, and friendships forged. The EWMGA gives back too! Our annual Toys for Tots tournament is co-hosted with local Marines and helps generate several hundred dollars and dozens of toys to be donated to those that this wonderful organization serves.

Based on suggestions and commentary that the Board receives every year and after every event that we sponsor we have decided to communicate this uniform document to all who join the EWMGA this year. Our dues are $75. Payment of these dues will constitute acceptance and understanding of the basic tenants of our group that are described below. By agreeing to these tenants, you are also agreeing to being questioned if you were not to abide by these simple things. As most/all of our events involve entry fees and prizes the Board (that sponsors these events) is tasked with the ensuring the integrity of competition to the best of our ability. We as a group must self-police to "protect the field" and make the games fun and fair to all that participate so that the Board is not forced to make handicap adjustments to any player who chooses not to follow rules. No one wants that. So here we go:

• All EWMGA events abide by the rules of golf set forth by the USGA that can be found here https://www.usga.org/rules-hub.html. It is the standard that ALL are playing by these rules. Notable exceptions may arise when alternative formats or local/tournament rules are introduced for any specific event and these will be communicated to all participating. Know the rules, please ask when you don’t.

• Enter all your scores. Many of us play in tournaments where NET divisions exist. Handicaps must be accurate and true for all these NET divisions to be fair for all. Don’t post Full Scramble, Texas Scramble, or Alternate shot scores. Every other round played, be it 18 or 9 holes, where the player is accountable for strokes played should be recorded for the purposes of maintaining an accurate USGA handicap. This is for all of us. Home or Away. Tournament or casual round.

• Police our own groups. Protect the field. If you witness a rules infraction during play – whether intentional or not – bring it up as it happens. Not after the round. This is a game of honor and we have all agreed to play by the rules.

• Please act with integrity and class. We are a unique and diverse group of men. We wish to be a good example of an organization within our Club.

Approximately 95% of the time when the weather is bad or forecasted to be bad, we will call the round prior to anyone teeing off.  For those one-off times when the weather turns quickly while we are playing, MGA Board members will get on a group text and determine if we should keep playing or not. If the consensus is to halt play, we will blow an "Air Horn" signaling that play has ended.  5 or more holes completed will get you 2 points but we WILL NOT pay out any winners unless 60% or more of the field has turned in a score card.  If you sign up to play, you agree and accept these terms.

This is a private Men's Club for the members of the MGA.

Unlike other games, in Alternate Shot games players do not use their total handicap. When calculating the team handicap, the lower course handicap golfer receives 60% of his course handicap. The higher course handicap team member receives 40% of his course handicap. Team handicaps are calculated by adding the two together and rounding to the nearest whole number.

MGA RESPONSE:

The MGA was created back in 1990 in an effort to add more structure and enjoyment to the game of golf.  We are not trying to replace any Club activities nor are we competing against them - on the contrary we are working closely with them to offer up more variety and more playing options that fit every individuals needs with an all encompassing goal of getting more members & making our club the greatest place in Northwest Georgia to play golf.  The Men's Golf Association is completely optional - you do not have to be a part of it; it is there to add additional tournaments, social events, camaraderie & just pure FUN to the already busy slate of events already in place and, more importantly, to partake in gaming activities that the Club cannot participate in.

"Where does that money go and why is it required?"

MGA RESPONSE:

Every MGA tournament that is created has a Tournament Chairman and 1-2 other Board members specifically assigned to run and Chair the event.  Budgets are created and scrutinized by every Board member until it works out to everyone's satisfaction.  We have approximately 8-10 events a year with 2 MGA Premier events - The Crème of the Crop Individual and Team events held in the Spring and the Fall.  Some tournaments are run to 'break even', some including the Premier events usually run as a deficit as we want to maximize payouts, prizes and F&B.  We support both the Pro Shop and the Restaurant as much as we can and encourage every MGA member to participate and do the same.  Guests are welcome once a year and overall, we are always very accommodating.  We do not publically post budgets but all of the discussion around costs are usually found in the Meeting Minutes and can be disclosed upon request.

 

The mere $50 that we collect for membership covers additional value for all of the tournaments (prizes, tee gifts, F&B....).  This fee has not increased since 2014, something that we are proud of and can all hang our hats on.  The MGA Board spends countless hours organizing tournament and running our Thursday Night Men's League.  Unfortunately we don't get paid for our efforts, we do this because we love the club, the course and the great people that play here.  

In summary, The MGA Board seats are elected positions by the members on an annual basis.  The 120+ members choose who they want to run it.  Anyone can run for the Board and we encourage it.  The monthly Board meetings are also open to all members.  We encourage anyone with ideas, issues & suggestions to come voice their opinions & concerns; constructive feedback is a positive thing.  I truly encourage anyone to contact me for further information, I would love to have a conversation with you.  I have been a member and doing this for over 30 years, history and experience I have.  This is a great place, I personally am honored and grateful for an unbelievably excellent Board of Directors and a supporting cast of members.  If there is anything we can do to make this a better place, we are all for it and are willing to listen.
